The Big Three of Astrology
The “Big Three” in tropical Astrology are the bare necessities of your birth chart. To understand someone on a superficial level, just interpret their Big Three. These aspects are the ones that form your persona, inside and out. Including the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant, the Big Three are arguably the three aspects to look at first when reading a chart. Most people associate their Sun sign as their primary zodiac sign. However, our chart ruler is our Ascendant’s ruling planet and/or whichever planet weighs the heaviest in our chart! Check out your Big Three here!
Sun
The Sun sign is the powerhouse we show people. Since we revolve around the Sun, this is the easiest placement to calculate on a chart. The Sun rules our public persona, basic disposition, and part of our life path. Separately, the Sun connects us with the Divine Masculine and the Fire Element. So, the sun intensifies the beauty of everything surrounding it.
The zodiac sign associated with the Big Three in birth charts shows us which traits we are here to grow in or out of. However, every individual is different, based on their chart. Therefore, we cannot understand someone fully by only their sun sign. We must evaluate the rest of the chart.
This is why astrologers commonly refer to “The Big Three.” They allow us to get a basic understanding of a person without going too deeply into their chart.
Moon
The Moon is the gentle nurturer. Existing in phases, the moon rules our inner thoughts and emotions. She connects us with the Divine Feminine, representing everything hidden in our subconscious minds. The Moon placement shows the way someone thinks, feels, and responds to others.
The Moon transits through the signs every 2-3 days and pushes and pulls our emotions just like the tides. Our personal experience is strongly tied to the moon, which connects us with the Water element. Following the Lunar phases can help us regulate our own experience.

Ascendant
Your Rising sign, also known as your Ascendant (Asc.), is where your chart begins. Calculated by the time and location of your birth, the Ascendant is the East Horizon at the exact moment you were born. The rest of your chart aligns the House System to this placement.
This is where the first house begins in a natal chart. The Ascendant represents one’s truest personality. It also predicts the way you relate to others.
When reading horoscopes, the Ascendant is the first sign you should look for. Next, look for the Moon, and finally the Sun. You will find your horoscope to be much more accurate.
The Big Three in Astrology- the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant are arguably the most important placements in all of Astrology. By mastering these, one can gain a truly fascinating understanding of self and mankind.
